If so, do I have to keep the temp relatively low after doing so? I'm never sure about the rules of heating dairy products too hot in a soup type meal. Sometimes it doesn't dissolve in and there are white chunks, etc. Thanks!Can I add sour cream into the pot of chili or will it get gross?
it should be fine, i put sour cream in my spaghetti sauce sometimes, just makes it richer and more creamy! (cream cheese is also good in there) and my spaghetti sauce is really thick like chili :D
also i don't know if a high temperature will wreck it, i would put the sour cream in near the end and let it simmer for a bit.

Yes you can, but there is a certain way to do it. In the culinary world the method to do this, is called Tempering. It is the process of combining two ingredients of different temperatures together so that the extreme heat and cold will not react against each other, they will combine smoothly. When this is not done correctly, the end result will be a product that is either separated, curdled, or just wont blend well.
Here's what you do. After your hot chili is done, ladle out about 1 cup of it into a separate bowl, let it cool for about 5 minutes. Next add about 1/2 cup of your sour cream to the chili that you let cool, and stir it together quickly. This will blend smoothly together without curdling (little white lumps). Now that you have combined two extreme temperature foods together, add another ladle of chili to the separate bowl, stir it in, and add about 1 cup of sour cream to the bowl, and stir. Now add this mixture back to your pot of chili, and you will be set to go. Hope this helps.
Gross potential is high. Best to serve it on the side and dollop it on at the last minute. That way, you don't have to deal with it curdling, or lumping or any other thing it takes a mind to do. and it preserves its rich tate, otherwise the delicate dairy taste will fade.
I made baked potato soup, and the sour cream goes in near the end of cooking.
I would not add it to the pot, what I usually do is put a scoop of the sour cream in the bowl right on top of the chilli, add shredded cheese and chopped onion and jalapeno if you wish.

That's gross. It will chunk up. If you're going to add something like sour cream to soups or similar recipes, you must do it at the very beginning while the sauce or liquid portion is thickening up, and before adding any meats, veggies, etc.
Why would you want to put sour cream INTO the chili? That will totally change the taste and look of it. The sour cream will melt, and your chili won't be dark red/brown anymore. Just serve it in dollops on top of the chili when you serve it
Dont put it in the chili,After the chili is done cooking put it in a bowl on dollop it on top, as you also could put shredded chedder, diced onions and jalenpeno peppers! Hope this works for ya!
If you want to get the full flavor of the sour cream add it when the chili is done. Strain out some of the liquid and whisk the sour cream into it now add it back into the chili.
Of course you can. Some of the best chili'sof the Islands have sour cream as a hidden ingredient. If u mix it in at a medium low heat it will blend in perfectly

When I use sour cream in something I am cooking, it is added at the last minute and heated just to under the boiling point. One of these is Stroganoff.
i put a big splash of milk in my chili if thats the kind of effect your seeking. don't put sour cream IN the chili. that would most definately be gross. put it on top.
did you know sour cream is the main ing in Stroganoff. do not worry about the temp you cant really ruin it. use real sour cream to avoid your lil lumpy friends hanging around. imitation make the lumps
yuck! No, sour cream is made from milk so I would say no unless you like the tast of sour MILK
